Bioquímico estadounidense. Enseñó en la Universidad de California, en Berkeley, desde 1948 hasta su muerte. Es conocido por su labor en la purificación y cristalización de los
virus para demostrar su estructura molecular. Cristalizó el virus del mosaico del tabaco y realizó trabajos importantes sobre el virus de la
influenza, para el cual desarrolló una vacuna. En 1946 compartió el Premio Nobel con John Howard Northrop y James Sumner.
